BISHAI COMPUTER DICTIONARY OF LITERARY ARABIC
Arabic – English

Compiled and Directed By Dr. Wilson B. Bishai
Retired Senior Lecturer on Arabic, Harvard University

USING THE DICTIONARY WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS

As soon as you click on the Dictionary icon labelled "ADAM", you start the Dictionary program. At this point, three windows will open: (1) "The Adam Report Window", (2) "The Arabic Dictionary and Morphology Window", henceforth referred to as "The Notepad Window", and (3) "The Adam Ouija – Enter Arabic Word Window", henceforth referred to as "The Alphabet Window". Its purpose is to enter Arabic Words for Lookup. These Windows can be moved, reduced and enlarged anywhere on the screen. You may change their size and place them anywhere you want on the screen. (See your WINDOWS Manual.)

The top horizontal bar in the "ADAM Report Window" includes the following boxes: "Hide/Show", "Next", "Last", "All", "Loose/Strict", and "English". The "Hide/Show" box causes the Arabic Dictionary Window to appear and disappear according to the user's wishes. The "Next" box gives the next meaning of a word being looked up. The "Last" box gives the last meaning. The "All" box gives all the possible meanings. The "Strict" part of the "Loose/Strict" box means that "Strict" matching is in effect, i.e., the word sought must be entered without suffixes or prefixes.

On the other hand, the "Loose" part means that "Loose" matching is in effect. "Loose" matching applies when the word to be defined includes prefixes and suffixes. The Morphology Program examines all the possibilities of the internal morphological variants of the word plus the prefixes and suffixes. This "Loose" search gives the user a number of possible sources for the compound word being searched. It is the user's job to choose the meaning that fits the text. However the user is advised to try the "Strict" matching first. When this fails to produce results, the "Loose" matching should then be tried.

The user will eventually become proficient in choosing which type of matching fits the search of words to be looked up. The "English" option on this bar allows the user to enter English words to be looked up in the Dictionary inside the "Alphabet Window". By clicking on the "English" option a smaller window will appear allowing the user to enter English words.

It may be noted here that the Dictionary was compiled from Arabic to English, and therefore cannot be used as an English Dictionary. Any search in English is only for the purpose of finding where in the Dictionary that word occurred. In order to enter Arabic words after the English search, the user must close the "English" small Window and go back to the original "Alphabet Window".

The MENU of the "Notepad Window" includes the following commands: File, Edit, Setup, Define, Wave, and Verb Analysis.

The "file" command includes Open and Save options.

The "Edit" command includes Cut, Copy, and Paste.

The "Setup" command includes Strict, Loose, Arabic, English, Alphabet "Ouija", and Report Window. The "Strict" and "Loose" options are explained above. They can also be invoked from this menu.

The "Alphabet or Ouija" option opens up the "Alphabet Window". This window includes a space to enter Arabic words. Above this space is a "Menu" bar which includes the following commands: "English" to allow the user to enter English words to be looked up in the Dictionary; "Trim left" to remove unwanted letters from the left; "Close" to end the Lookup activity; "Clear" to erase a previous word in order to enter a new word; "Trim right" to remove unwanted letters from the right, and "Enter" to execute the Lookup procedure. The key marked ENTER on the keyboard may be used also for this purpose. This window includes also the letters of the Arabic Alphabet to be used with the help of a mouse instead of an Arabic keyboard to introduce Arabic words by clicking at the letters one at a time.

Next to "Setup" is the "Define" command. It invokes the Dictionary meaning of the entered English word for looked up. The other commands next to the "Define" command are "Wave" and "Verb Analysis". Clicking on the "Wave" command invokes the Arabic Morphology Synthesis Program. However, clicking on the "Verb Analysis" command invokes the Arabic Morphology Analysis Program.
The ICONS in the "Notepad Window" function as follows:

The "Open", "Save", and "Exit" icons under the "File" command; The "Cut", "Copy", and "Paste" icons under the "Edit" command. The slanted blue "W" icon is similar to the "Define" command on the Menu bar. Its function is to seek the Dictionary definition of a word to be looked up. The two plus signs "++" icon is a command to seek all the definitions of a word to be looked up. The "arrow turning backward" icon is a command to display a previous definition. The Arabic " Lam " icon changes the background colour of the "Report" window. The Arabic " ‘Ayn " icon opens the "Adam Word Entry" window which enables the user to introduce Arabic words to be looked up. The " E " icon opens the small window inside the "Alphabet Window" to enter English words for lookup. The " Fa, ‘Ayn, Lam " icon introduces the "Arabic Morphology Synthesis" program. The "?" icon introduces the "Arabic Verb Analysis" program.

HOW TO USE THE NOTEPAD

[1] To introduce English Text into the "Notepad Window":

[A] Use the mouse to click anywhere inside the window to introduce the "cursor" at the top left of the window, then type text

[B] copy/cut and paste it from its original place

[C] use the "Open" command under "File" on the menu to introduce text files (Text Files only) into the Window.

At any time, the user may type one word at a time in this window and look it up. If the user is running this program from ARABIC WINDOWS, it is possible to open bilingual TEXT files only in this Window.

[2] The user who is not running this program from ARABIC WINDOWS cannot introduce Arabic words directly into the Dictionary Window because the English Windows system does not allow entering Arabic text. However, by clicking on the "'Ayn" icon, a special window is opened called "ADAM Ouija - Enter Arabic Word" Window. This window is planned to enable the
user to enter Arabic words to be looked up.

GENERAL REMARKS FOR USING THE DICTIONARY

[1] To Look Up the FIRST Meaning of a Word:

Select or double-click on a word in the "Notepad Window" and then click on the blue "W" in the Icon Bar or the "Define" command on the "Menu" bar. If you are entering Arabic words in the "Alphabet Window", introduce ONE word at a time and then click on the "Enter" command on the "Menu" bar of the same window

[2] To look up other meanings of a Word:

Move the cursor to the "Report" Window where the first definition appeared, then click the mouse button to get the second definition, then click it again to get the third, and so on.

[3] To Select the Next Word for Look-up:

Type it in and repeat from step [1].

ARABIC MORPHOLOGY SYNTHESIS AND ANALYSIS

By clicking on the "Far, ‘Ayn, Lam " icon in the "Notepad Window", or on the "Wave" command on the "Menu" bar, the Arabic Morphology window is opened. This window includes all the parameters of Arabic Morphology Grammar Rules.

The user is advised to explore all the functions of these
Grammar parameters, choose new roots, conjugations, and
any other features to be included.

At all times the Arabic word which fits any given parameters always appears at the top left side of the window. By experimenting with the various options available on the various columns of the window, the user will become proficient in making use of all the possibilities at his command.

Click on the "?" icon, to Open the "Morphology Analysis" window together with the "Alphabet Window". This "Alphabet Window" is planned to enable the user to enter Arabic verbal forms for morphological Analysis. When the user enters an Arabic word and then clicks on the "Enter" command, a full morphological analysis of the entered word appears in the response window.

This "Morphology Analysis" program analyses perfect, imperfect, and imperative verbs, participles, and masdar forms only, regardless of their number, person, gender, case, or state. Pure noun forms, adjectives, particles, and prepositions will not be accepted for morphological analysis.

HOW TO USE THE ELECTRONIC VOCABULARY EXERCISES

As soon as the user clicks on the "EVE" icon inside the "Program Manager" Window, the "ELECTRONIC VOCABULARY EXERCISES" Window opens up.
The "MENU" on the horizontal bar of this Window includes the following commands:

"File" which includes the "Exit" command; "Setup" which opens up the "EVE Vocabulary Selection" Window; "Concentration" which introduces the Vocabulary squares Concentration Game; and "Word Power" which introduces the Multiple Choice Arabic and English Vocabulary Word Power.

The "EVE "Setup" Selection Window allows the user to select the exact portions of the whole Dictionary or the Wordlist which contains the most frequently used Arabic words. The user may select only verbs or only nouns or mixed vocabulary from the Dictionary itself.

The user may also select Wordlist lessons or Wordlist Review. The user may also select the number of words in each lesson, and the lesson number for drilling.

The user may also select the number of total lessons in the Wordlist for Review Drilling. Once the user completes the selections, the "OK" square may be clicked to go back to the original Window. At this time the user may select "The "Concentration" game or the "Word Power" Drills. Clicking on the "Concentration" Command opens up the "Concentration" Game Window. The "MENU" on the horizontal bar of this Window includes the following:

"Setup" to modify selections; "Dimensions" to choose the number of squares to play; "Font" to choose the size of fonts; "Cheat" to allow the program to choose (the user must then click on the right answer); "Word Power" to move to the Word Power Vocabulary Drills; and "Close" to terminate the Game.

Clicking on the "Word Power" Command opens up the Multiple Choice Vocabulary Drills Window. The "MENU" on this Window includes the following options:

"Setup"to modify selections;

"Arabic" to allow drilling to proceed from Arabic to English;

"English" to reverse the drilling and allow it to proceed from English to Arabic;

"Give Up" to allow the program give the right answer;

"Concentration" to move to the Concentration Game;
