USING THE DICTIONARY WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWSAs soon as you click on the
Dictionary icon labelled "ADAM", you start the Dictionary program. At this
point, three windows will open: (1) "The Adam Report Window", (2) "The
Arabic Dictionary and Morphology Window", henceforth referred to as "The Notepad
Window", and (3) "The Adam Ouija Enter Arabic Word Window",
henceforth referred to as "The Alphabet Window". Its purpose is to enter Arabic
Words for Lookup. These Windows can be moved, reduced and enlarged anywhere on the screen.
You may change their size and place them anywhere you want on the screen. (See your
WINDOWS Manual.)
The top horizontal bar in the "ADAM Report Window" includes the following boxes:
"Hide/Show", "Next", "Last", "All",
"Loose/Strict", and "English". The "Hide/Show" box causes
the Arabic Dictionary Window to appear and disappear according to the user's wishes. The
"Next" box gives the next meaning of a word being looked up. The
"Last" box gives the last meaning. The "All" box gives all the
possible meanings. The "Strict" part of the "Loose/Strict" box means
that "Strict" matching is in effect, i.e., the word sought must be entered
without suffixes or prefixes.
On the other hand, the "Loose" part means that "Loose" matching is in
effect. "Loose" matching applies when the word to be defined includes prefixes
and suffixes. The Morphology Program examines all the possibilities of the internal
morphological variants of the word plus the prefixes and suffixes. This "Loose"
search gives the user a number of possible sources for the compound word being searched.
It is the user's job to choose the meaning that fits the text. However the user is advised
to try the "Strict" matching first. When this fails to produce results, the
"Loose" matching should then be tried.
The user will eventually become proficient in choosing which type of matching fits the
search of words to be looked up. The "English" option on this bar allows the
user to enter English words to be looked up in the Dictionary inside the "Alphabet
Window". By clicking on the "English" option a smaller window will appear
allowing the user to enter English words.
It may be noted here that the Dictionary was compiled from Arabic to English, and
therefore cannot be used as an English Dictionary. Any search in English is only for the
purpose of finding where in the Dictionary that word occurred. In order to enter Arabic
words after the English search, the user must close the "English" small Window
and go back to the original "Alphabet Window".
The MENU of the "Notepad Window" includes the following commands: File, Edit,
Setup, Define, Wave, and Verb Analysis.
The "file" command includes Open and Save options.
The "Edit" command includes Cut, Copy, and Paste.
The "Setup" command includes Strict, Loose, Arabic, English, Alphabet
"Ouija", and Report Window. The "Strict" and "Loose" options
are explained above. They can also be invoked from this menu.
The "Alphabet or Ouija" option opens up the "Alphabet Window". This
window includes a space to enter Arabic words. Above this space is a "Menu" bar
which includes the following commands: "English" to allow the user to enter
English words to be looked up in the Dictionary; "Trim left" to remove unwanted
letters from the left; "Close" to end the Lookup activity; "Clear" to
erase a previous word in order to enter a new word; "Trim right" to remove
unwanted letters from the right, and "Enter" to execute the Lookup procedure.
The key marked ENTER on the keyboard may be used also for this purpose. This window
includes also the letters of the Arabic Alphabet to be used with the help of a mouse
instead of an Arabic keyboard to introduce Arabic words by clicking at the letters one at
a time.
Next to "Setup" is the "Define" command. It invokes the Dictionary
meaning of the entered English word for looked up. The other commands next to the
"Define" command are "Wave" and "Verb Analysis". Clicking on
the "Wave" command invokes the Arabic Morphology Synthesis Program. However,
clicking on the "Verb Analysis" command invokes the Arabic Morphology Analysis
Program.
The ICONS in the "Notepad Window" function as follows:
The "Open", "Save", and "Exit" icons under the
"File" command; The "Cut", "Copy", and "Paste"
icons under the "Edit" command. The slanted blue "W" icon is similar
to the "Define" command on the Menu bar. Its function is to seek the Dictionary
definition of a word to be looked up. The two plus signs "++" icon is a command
to seek all the definitions of a word to be looked up. The "arrow turning
backward" icon is a command to display a previous definition. The Arabic " Lam
" icon changes the background colour of the "Report" window. The Arabic
" Ayn " icon opens the "Adam Word Entry" window which enables
the user to introduce Arabic words to be looked up. The " E " icon opens the
small window inside the "Alphabet Window" to enter English words for lookup. The
" Fa, Ayn, Lam " icon introduces the "Arabic Morphology
Synthesis" program. The "?" icon introduces the "Arabic Verb
Analysis" program.

ARABIC MORPHOLOGY SYNTHESIS AND ANALYSIS
By clicking on the "Far, Ayn, Lam " icon in the "Notepad
Window", or on the "Wave" command on the "Menu" bar, the Arabic
Morphology window is opened. This window includes all the parameters of Arabic Morphology
Grammar Rules.
The user is advised to explore all the functions of these
Grammar parameters, choose new roots, conjugations, and
any other features to be included.
At all times the Arabic word which fits any given parameters always appears at the top
left side of the window. By experimenting with the various options available on the
various columns of the window, the user will become proficient in making use of all the
possibilities at his command.

together with the "Alphabet Window". This "Alphabet Window" is planned
to enable the user to enter Arabic verbal forms for morphological Analysis. When the user
enters an Arabic word and then clicks on the "Enter" command, a full
morphological analysis of the entered word appears in the response window.
This "Morphology Analysis" program analyses perfect, imperfect, and imperative
verbs, participles, and masdar forms only, regardless of their number, person, gender,
case, or state. Pure noun forms, adjectives, particles, and prepositions will not be
accepted for morphological analysis.
