Seize the Day

This 1986 film--a dead-serious performance by Robin
Williams, minus the overlay of schmaltz that informed his acting in the late
1990s--sat on the shelf and had no theatrical release, for obvious reasons:
the film has the downbeat spiral of a 1970s film, relentless in its
depiction of human frailty at the breaking point. That doesn't mean it's a
bad film; to the contrary, it's actually quite a good film. But it is in no
way audience-friendly in its vision of a human being who has reached the end
of his tether. Directed by Fielder Cook, it's based on a Saul Bellow novel
and strikes exactly the right note, a combination of absurdity and dread.
Williams has the desperate energy of a man approaching 40 with nothing to
show for his life--and a disapproving, disappointed father he's constantly
trying to impress. Jerry Stiller is great as Williams's seeming friend, who
hooks him into a business deal guaranteed to change his life and his luck.

Manito

Directed by first time filmmaker Eric Eason, Manito
is a riveting story of two brothers set against the volatile backdrop of a
changing inner city. Shot in cinema verité style, Manito reflects a
community when it transformed from drugs and violence to one of the most
vibrant Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. Although the dealers were
disappearing their violent legacy remained casting a shadow over the
neighborhood and its residents. Junior Moreno (Franky G.), an ex-convict
struggling to get his life back, is a product of that legacy. His brother
Manny, (Leo Minaya) the salutatorian of his high school class, embodies hope
in the neighborhood. On the night of his graduation party, Manny faces an
ill-fated decision that could change his life forever, while Junior tries to
prevent his little brother from becoming another casualty. With gritty,
luminescent cinematography and unflinching portrayals of characters that
embody the heart and soul of the neighborhood, writer/director Eric Eason
brings us an electrifying feature debut in the finest tradition of
independent filmmaking.

Mrs.
Palfrey at the Claremont

Oscar-nominated actress Joan Plowright is the titular Mrs.
Palfrey in this heartwarming comedy. When an elderly Scottish widow moves to
London she finds the big city less welcoming than she expected. Mrs. Palfrey
is disheartened when her nephew doesn't return her calls. But when a young
man (Rupert Friend) helps her after a fall she discovers that the metropolis
may not be as lonely as it first appeared. Though Plowright has made a
career out of playing strong supporting roles she easily makes the
transition to leading lady in this film.
