Any of us can see the joy a child feels upon hearing a bedtime lullaby or morning anthem. And there are few of us who does not remember these songs, even after so many years (and possibly the rest of our lives) with the passion that they were sung to us by our mothers, grandmothers and teachers. And we even are still able to recite these songs with great detail, in order to pass them on to our children and students.

The modern approach to education in many developing countries has evolved to envelop the use of music, singing and physical expression and movement as a transitional tool in creating a generation of lively and mature individuals. These musical tools are also an excellent method of instilling a strong conscious, memory thread that stays with us for life.

Musical Activity at School

Singing at school has become an integral part of the educational process. It has become a partner to learning vocabulary and concepts in nearly any syllabus. Through singing, a child can repeat this new information year-round without getting bored. Singing is considered one of the most important activities a child practices during a school day. It encourages teamwork and enhances physical activity where the child may practice different games that are based on music and rhythm. Singing plays an important part in presenting initial musical concepts, such as rhythm, pitch and intensity, as well as exposing the child to listening to different musical instruments.

Music is a main factor in the fabric of society, and through it are instilled nationalistic values, while it also creates healthy relationship with the sense of belonging to a country by enriching knowledge of that country’s artifacts and landmarks. Singing is as much tied to words as it is to melody, and pure, traditional singing can be a tool to pass on the Arabic language to the new generation that is so affected and influenced by Franco-Anglican culture, so much so that they know it better than their arab roots.

BIG Music for Little Ears

For 10 years now, Loureen Hattar has been teaching primary & kindergarten children from the ages of 3 to 7. But long before her career as a school teacher, Hattar spent most of her youth and young adulthood singing for the once-famous “Fuheis Group”. Drawing from her solid background in music, she has been actively composing and singing here own songs (and others’) to her students in an attempt at encouraging their musical awareness.

In her most recent effort at developing musical education in Jordan and the Middle East, Loureen has taken it upon herself to record an entire album of children’s songs completely in Arabic. Basing upon a foundation of traditional, heritage material, with intelligent arabic music for children in mind, Hattar has used many of her own compositions and added movements to music to create something truly unique that the arab world has been calling out for.
