The World's Most Popular Office Suite
Award Winning Software Now in Arabic;
Office 97 Arabic Edition Set to Grow Arabic Internet and Intranets.
DUBAI, -- 10 May 1997 -- Microsoft has announced that Office 97 Arabic Edition has been
released to manufacture and that the product is now available. Arabic users now have
access to the latest upgrade of the world's best-selling office suite, only five months
after the English Edition. This represents a substantial reduction in the delivery time
(delta) between the English and Arabic Editions and a major milestone in the development
of quality Arabic software.
"The Arabic Edition of Microsoft Office 97 is the most significant upgrade in the
history of Microsoft Office," said Ahmed Chami, general manager, Microsoft Middle
East. "We believe that this product will have a great impact on accelerating the
growth of Arabic Internet and intranets in the Middle East."
Microsoft Office 97 Arabic Edition combines the performance of 32-bit application with
IntelliSense technology. "This upgrade is not only easy to use it also increases
efficiency and minimises the need for technical support through the innovations inherent
in the product," stated Chami. "These factors all work to help companies reduce
the total cost of ownership."
Microsoft conducted over 25,000 hours of customer research while developing Office 97.
More than 10,000 people were interviewed and their feedback indicated that users wanted a
more user-friendly product which provided better integration between the individual Office
applications. This is why the development of Office 97 focused on three particular areas:
enhancing usability, providing Internet-ready applications and including Interactive
collaboration tools.
"The Arabic Edition of Microsoft Office 97 has been tested in Beta sites across the
Middle East and the Gulf, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Lebanon. It has been open to
all sizes of organisations, in addition to developers and home users," said Asem
Galal, product manager, Windows & Desktop Applications Division, Microsoft Middle East.
"In addition to the significant new versions of its component applications including
Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access and the PowerPoint presentation graphics
program, other areas of particular development were the new collaboration capabilities of
Outlook 97, the new member of the Microsoft Office family, Internet integration and the
IntelliSense technology featured in the Office Assistant."
"Microsoft Outlook is a desktop information management application that helps users
to organise and work with information from one location on the desktop," said Annas
Abbar, group program manager, Middle East Products Development , Microsoft Corporation.
"In practise, this means that users are managing their e-mail, calendar, contacts,
tasks and documents from one location." Outlook further incorporates innovations such
as AutoPreview which lets users preview their e-mail messages without having to open them,
and Outlook Journal which provides an efficient means of tracking and accessing recently
used documents.
By integrating Internet technologies, Microsoft has made another significant step forward
in software development. Users can now create hyperlinks, publish content on the Web in
HTML or Office file formats, find Office or HTML documents on their organisations network,
and even edit Office documents live inside their Web browser. Collaboration tools allow
people to work on the same spreadsheet simultaneously, store multiple versions of
documents in a single file and manage revisions to documents made by multiple users.
Office Assistant is a new interactive animated help system that unifies online user
assistance, giving users the chance to ask questions in their own words and answering them
with helpful suggestions.
More than eight million licenses have already been sold for Office 97 (all versions) since
its launch in January '97 and over 1,000 large companies are actively deploying or
evaluating Office 97. The success of Office 97 has already been recognised through the
awards that it has received. These include: PC Week Analysts Choice - Developer Edition
(Jan, 1997); BYTE 1997 Editors Choice (Jan, 1997); PC Magazine Editor's Choice (Feb,
1997); and PC World "World Class Award" (April, 1997).
