Questions and Answers

Q. Can I upgrade from my existing 16-bit Windows or Windows for Workgroups (English/Arabic) to
Arabic Windows 95?

A. Yes. You can either upgrade your system to Arabic Windows 95 within the same directory to preserve your
program groups, or you may install it to a new directory, in which case you will have to re-install all of your applications.

Q. Can I upgrade from my existing Windows 95 to Arabic Windows 95?

A. Yes. Install Arabic Windows 95 into the same directory as your current installation of Windows 95.

Q. Will my existing programs running on 16-bit Windows 3x in English & Arabic work on Arabic Windows 95?

A. with bi-di 16-bit APIs, it remains our position that applications that worked on previous Arabic versions of Windows
and Windows for Workgroups will work on Arabic Windows 95.

Q. If my company has an installed base of English products and Arabic products, will there be any issues with sharing information between them (Arabic versions using English text, data, etc.)?

A. Users can exchange documents without any loss of data. Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, Access databases can be saved with localized and English applications. Arabic text will show as garbage if opened by an English application on an English operating system.

Q. What are the minimum requirements for Microsoft Windows 95 Arabic Edition?

A. The minimum requirements are the same as those for the U.S. version, i.e.: 386 processor or higher, 4MB RAM with 8MB recommended, up to 60MB Hard Disk space and VGA or higher resolution. Note that Arabic Windows 95 is designed to take advantage of additional system resources, so that if you add more memory, processor power or hard disk space, you will boost the performance.

Q. What is the suggested configuration of Arabic Windows 95 to run optimally?

A. We suggest that you should have a 486 processor with 16 MB of RAM to get the full benefit of the product.

Q. Is this Microsoft Arabic Windows 95 fully localized?

A. There are two versions being offered by Microsoft: an enabled and a fully localized.

Q. So why isn't Microsoft releasing a single bi-di version of the product?

A. The complexity of the operating system itself (over 10 million lines of code and over 2000 files) made it too destabilizing to make the changes required to properly support two user interface languages.

Q. Will the dual interface metaphor of Arabic Windows for Workgroups be supported?

A. No. Microsoft Windows '95 is a completely new operating system and will be available in two separate versions.

Q. What is the difference between these two versions?

A. The Enabled Version has a completely English User Interface, while the Localized Version has a completely Arabic User Interface. All other functionality of the two versions is exactly the same!

Q. What are the technical feature differences between English and Arabic 95 products?

A. All features that are available in the English 95 products will work when using the English user interface in the localized applications. However, there are some features that do not work when using the Arabic interface such as the Grammar Checker.

Q. Do I have to buy two products separately if I can't make up my mind which user interface I want to use?

A. There are several packages available for Windows '95 Arabic Edition, one of these includes both the version of the
same CD, with dual documentation as well (English and Arabic). However, keep in mind that you only have one license in
the package and as such can only install one of the versions on a single machine.

Q. What is the extent of Arabization within the Localized version of Arabic Windows 95?

A. Almost all of the existing user interface of Windows 95 including Help Screens, Dialog boxes, Menus, Applets, etc., have been arabized.

Q. What is missing from Arabic Windows 95 that is available in the US version?

A. Do not forget that Arabic Windows '95 is a superset of the US version and as such not only has all of the features of English Windows 95, but also has complete Arabic support which the US version does not.

Q. Is Microsoft Plus! supported on Arabic Windows 95?

A. Microsoft doesn't officially support Microsoft Plus!on Arabic Win 95.

Q. Does Arabic Windows 95 have the Internet Explorer built in?

A. Yes. Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0 is built into Arabic Windows 95.

Q. How do I get the latest version of Internet Explorer?

A. Once you have connected to the Internet go to http://www.microsoft.com/i.e. to download Internet Explorer 3.0.

Q. Does the Internet Explorer have support for Arabic?

A. No. Microsoft is committed to developing the Internet Explorer with Arabic support, however, at the present time the release schedule for this product is not definite.

Q. What are the technical reasons for the delay in the Arabic Windows 95 and the Arabic Office 95 products?
What steps are being taken, if any, to correct problems in the future and shorten the time between the English
and Arabic products availability dates?

A. The complexity of engineering the operating system Windows 95 was a major task. Arabic product users will no longer see major delays. We are now in the process of merging and adding our Arabic specific code into the International English code trees and thus will no longer need to recreate the code trees for every new Arabic version. These engineering advances will enable us to recycle our code, thus reducing the development time between English and Arabic versions. In addition, the release of the Arabic edition of Windows 95 represents a major operating system upgrade to a 32 bit platform. Arabic edition of Windows 95 is a stable long term operating system that will be in place for the next versions of the Arabic Desktop applications, allowing our development team to focus on advancing the Arabic Desktop suite fast and more efficiently.
